Miners' Memorial Day Campaign & Support Group Badge Issues

Miners' Memorial Day Campaign

Their needs to be a "special day" when the country remembers all those that gave their lives to the Mining Industry plus all the miners who continue to suffer from industrial illness associated with the winning of Britain's mineral resources. In order to establish for such a Miners' Memorial Day a national campaign has been started by John R. Kitching Associate Member of Durham Area N.U.M. and Member of the National Mining Memorabilia Association.

John lives in the former mining village of Brandon, in County Durham and is well known for fundraising to have a replica banner made of the Browney Colliery Miners Lodge banner, which is paraded at the Durham Miners Gala every July, and assisting to locate a pit pulley wheel which serves as the villages Mining Memorial. He is also a keen collector of mining memorabilia and has long advocated that a Mining Heritage centre should be established in Durham City to promote "The County Built on Coal".

The Campaign to create a petition of names has started up and down the country, which shall be forwarded to 10, Downing Street, London in late Summer of 2005. (closing date is the 1st August 2005)

We hope a day will be set aside to remember all Mineworkers who gave their lives to the mining industry of Britain and to honour those who did so much for the wealth of this nation, including Miners who continue to suffer from related mining industrial diseases.

The Campaign has the endorsement of the the Durham Area of the National Union of Mineworkers and the backing of the Right Honourable Gerry Steinberg M.P. for Durham City who has tabled a motion to put pressure on the government for a "Special Day of Remembrance".
